Course Description

The MCA Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC1) provides fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical training required under the DfT Codes of Practice for small commercial motor and sailing vessels.

Delivered over five days (30 hours), the course covers dismantling marine engines and auxiliaries to understand components, working principles, and maintenance techniques. It equips delegates with the skills and confidence to perform basic maintenance, address safety and fire hazards, and diagnose and repair machinery defects.

Absolutely. We welcome individual bookings. We also offer group and commercial bookings – get in touch if you're arranging training for your crew or team.
What is the AEC course?
The AEC (Approved Engine Course) is an MCA-recognised course designed to provide essential knowledge of marine diesel engines. It’s ideal for those working on vessels who need a basic understanding of engine operation and maintenance.
Who should take the AEC course?
AEC is suitable for: Deckhands or stewards wanting engineering knowledge Skippers or crew of small commercial vessels Engineers starting in the marine industry Anyone interested in understanding marine engines
What is the difference between AEC Part 1 and AEC Part 2? AEC1: Introduces the basic principles of diesel engines, systems, and maintenance. AEC2: Builds on AEC1 with advanced diagnostics, fault finding, and system integration, including electronic control systems. AEC2 is only available to those who have completed AEC1.

Do I need to have previous experience?
No prior mechanical experience is required for AEC1 – it’s designed for beginners. AEC2 does require successful completion of AEC1 or an equivalent qualification.
How long is the course?
Each part of the course (AEC1 and AEC2) runs over five days, combining classroom theory with practical, hands-on training in our workshop.
What will I learn?
AEC1 includes: 2- and 4-stroke engine operation Fuel, cooling, lubrication and electrical systems Basic fault finding and maintenance Safety and pollution control
Where does the course take place?
Courses are delivered at Seagrass Marine HQ in Oban, fully equipped with engines, tools, and testing equipment for practical learning.
Is the course assessed?
Yes – AEC courses include practical and written assessments. We support all learners and aim to make assessments fair and accessible.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes – successful candidates receive an MCA-approved certificate for AEC1 and/or AEC2, valid for use in the UK and internationally on applicable vessels.
